October is National Physical Therapy Month!

Written by: Heather Holbrook, PT DPT

Physical Therapy is a profession that started in the early 1900’s that has grown to use scientifically based research and clinical applications to restore, maintain, and promote optimal physical function starting in infancy and spanning to the geriatric population.

Did you know:

  • Physical therapy was recognized as a profession in the early 1900’s as a way to help patients recover from Polio–they were originally referred to as “reconstruction aides.”
  • Physical Therapy started out as a 2 year Certificate Program and has progressed to a Doctorate Program.
  • Physical therapists can treat a wide variety of conditions including:  orthopedics, neurology, pediatrics, geriatrics, sports, acute care, pelvic health, oncology, and chronic pain.
  • Physical Therapy can assist patients in managing pain and potentially avoid opioid use.
  • Physical Therapists can assist in avoiding surgical intervention and many physicians will prescribe physical therapy prior to surgical intervention.  If surgery is necessary, physical therapy can also help in your recovery.
  • Physical Therapy can be the first line of defense with many conditions including chronic pain, tendonitis, bursitis, strain, sprain, poor balance, and difficulty with gait.
  • The Health Services Research journal reports that patients with lower back pain who utilized physical therapy as the first line of defense reported an average of 72% fewer costs within the first year than those who did not utilize physical therapy.

It is the goal of a physical therapist to improve and maintain mobility throughout all phases of life.  Physical Therapists recommend individuals engage in regular activity that promotes flexibility, strength, endurance, posture and balance to allow for optimal function as you age.
