Outpatient therapy can help increase cancer survivorship

Feeling the Irish luck this month? Recent research shows luck may not be needed to help increase survival odds in older cancer patients.

Improving ambulatory function in older cancer patients may increase survival odds. Ambulatory function is a term used to describe a person’s capability to walk. This includes gait, balance, coordination, pace, and the level of support needed to walk. Ambulatory function is an area of focus for Goodcare AtHome Rehab physical therapists.

Researchers found several correlations between cancer, poor ambulatory functioning, and decreased cancer survival. Compared with brisk walking individuals without a cancer diagnosis, cancer survivors with the slowest walking pace had 10x greater risk of death.

Elizabeth Salerno, Ph.D. reports, “Our findings suggest that functional health may be adversely affected by a broad range of cancer diagnoses and may be an important determinant for survival,” Salerno said. “[O]ur results highlight the potential importance of monitoring, and even targeting, ambulatory function after cancer for survival benefits, particularly in older cancer survivors.”

The research from Dr. Salerno highlights a link between a slower walking pace and increased mortality in both cancer survivors and those without cancer. The study was conducted at the National Cancer Institute. Full findings were published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
